The person I interviewed for this assignment is a friend
and a current student at Rutgers. Her name is Ashar Sanchez she is Arabic and
has grown up in Jordan until about the age of 10. Ashar’s story is simple, she
went to school like every other boy and girl, but she tells us of what she
remembers back when she lived in Jordan.
The interview given to Ashar consisted of three major
questions. The first question, being more a statement than an actual question
was, “Tell me about yourself and where you and your family are from”. Ashar’s
answer was simple and straight forward “Well, my parents and grandparents are
from Palestine. They eventually moved to Jordan and had me and my brother. We
lived in a small town about 15 minutes away from Amman, the capital of Jordan.
Me and my brother went to school just like every young girl and boy in the
world. But I went to an all-girls school and my brother went to an all-boys
school.”
The second question Ashar was asked was, “Do you have any
stories to tell us about why you and your family migrated here? Ashar answered
by saying, “The original story was that my grandparents came to visit the
states and really liked it here, so they ended up moving to America. Eventually
my parents also moved to America because they wanted to be with family. But
what also effected the decision for me and my family to move to America was my
dad’s career. My father was a civil engineer; his engineering company went
bankrupt. Once my father’s company went bankrupt, we moved to America for an
opportunity for him to start a new company.
The third and final question Ashar received was, “What
are your thoughts and opinions on pre-modern and modern Middle East? Ashar
explained before that she moved to America around the age of 10, so it made
sense when she told me that she doesn’t know how to answer the question. But
she did have something to say, she said “My father is actually in Jordan now,
he says it’s not what it used to be. He says that he notices changes in living,
such as modernization and industrialized.” I asked, “Would you be able to
explain with just a little more detail by what you mean?” She replies with,
“Well by modernization, Jordan has more buildings and stores then I remembered
from when I was a kid. Also people are starting to wear different clothing and
brand material. It’s not what I remembered it to be.”
Ashar provided me with as much information as she could.
To sum it all up, Ashar is Arabic and originally from Jordan and moved to
America at around the age of 10. The reason her family moved from Jordan to
America was because of family and the opportunities that America offered.
